CHI SIAMO → ABOUT US

The Artistic Group of Torno (G.A.T. Gruppo Artistico Tornasco) was founded in Torno in 1975 as an issue from the Pro Loco, that promoted several cultural activities during the 1970s, such as painting exhibitions to promote local painters.
Besides, it organised photo shows, printed from old plates of the early 20th century, and also exhibitions about usages and customs from the ancient time till today.
These last activities led to the publication of an interesting volume issued by the Pro Loco named Torno ieri e oggi (Torno yesterday and today) where photographic images were expounded by Paolo Elia Sala, charter member and president of G.A.T. until May 2000.
Painters and poets, in those years members in Pro Loco, founded the Artistic Group of Torno, that immediately marked out for the good quality and valour of their own members.
Mainly during the early years, G.A.T. allowed rooms for local artists of the lake, organizing group or one-man shows.
In 1978, pushed by an excited public, members of G.A.T. published an interesting volume entitled I vèrs del G.A.T. e i sò spegasc (The verses of the cat and its scrawls; please note that the acronym G.A.T. is the pronounce in lake dialect of the Italian word “gatto” that means “cat”). In the work, there are illustrated poetries with graphic compositions exclusively written by the members. The book is still available at the local news-stand in Via Roma, 25. Contact the secretary  for more information and how to purchase it.
During the years, G.A.T. has expanded its range of activities to the photography, theatre, music and culture. Thus several people with their own artistic and cultural inclinations contributed to increase the level of quality of the association.
An very successful production was the staging of  La gùndula del Fendin (The Fendin’s boat). The author Paolo Elia Sala put in writing an ancient and oral local legend, making as theatre pièce.
Thanks to the work of the most part of the affiliates (actors, painters and photographers), the play was realised in 1985 at the pier of Torno. Due to  the huge success of public, it was replied in the summer of 1986.
From that moment, G.A.T. has continued to work with the aim of exploiting the artistic and cultural beauties of the village of Torno, which was  birthplace of many glorious artists, as local painters as Bartolomeo De Benzi and Andrea De Passeris, lived in the 17th century, and the well famous Ancient Roman scientist Elder Plinius, born in Perlasca fraction of the town, and dead under the famous eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.C.
For this reason, since 1975, it has promoted the famous Via De Benzi Open-Air Exhibition that has reached this year the 32nd edition between the days xxth and xxth 2009.
